Recovery Session Client Testimonial - Sarah
As a women who had eating disorders as a part of my life for over a decade, offering Recovery Sessions are the work I am most passionate about. After having spent years of hard work in healing myself - mind, body and spirit - I know the commitment and determination it takes to make choose recovery.
Seeing other women who are walking the path that was so well worn by myself is something I am so proud to witness. But above that, being able to give back and help the women who are where I once stood, is a true privilege and honour.
Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, and are so shrouded by guilt and shame. Knowing the statistics, knowing what it's like to experience one firsthand, and knowing all that has to happen in order to escape it, I know how important this work is that I do.
Sharing the stories of the women I so deeply connect with brings me so much pride and joy.
Today I am honoured to being to sharing my interview with Sarah with all of you. The strength and courage that it takes to share one's story is something that is truly inspiring. Not only does it give hope to those who are going through recovery, but also to the loved ones of those who are ill.
Thank you Sarah for your bravery throughout your boudoir session and in sharing your words with us here.
Can you tell us a bit about your Eating Disorder history?
"My eating disorder was triggered by a physical injury that resulted in my having to take time off from my running and active life style – I later found out through my work with my counselor that the grass roots of my ED stemmed from feelings of being unworthy, unheard, and trapped."
What was the turning point in your choosing recovery - what made you decide that you wanted recovery?
"It came to a point that I realized I was out of control, and that I couldn’t stop on my own accord."
what one word represents what recovery means to you?
What are you most proud of in your recovery journey?
"That I have been able to release the shame I felt, and learned to love myself again."
What is the best recovery advice you have ever received?
"The truth will set you free – the more I was honest with myself about my behaviours and motives, the better I was able to shift my dysfunctional behaviour."
Do you have a go-to self care activity?
"Hiking <3 Chasing the sunrise up mountainsides saved my life."
What made you decide to do a boudoir session?
"The story of Chelsey really played into my decision to do the photo shoot, as she too had experienced an ED I felt like she could relate to my feelings toward my body, and I trusted her. I felt like this experience could really support me in shifting how I see myself."
Would you recommend a boudoir session for anybody else who is recovering from an eating disorder?
"100% It was very liberating!"
Do you have any other thoughts about your boudoir session that you would like to share?
"I remember a specific moment in the session when Chelsey showed me one of the photos she took, and I began to cry – in that moment, I think it was the first time in a long while I saw myself as beautiful."
Thank you again Sarah for you courage in sharing your story, and allowing me to share your images!
