Eating Disorder Recovery Session - Miss S. Testimonial
Within the month of November, Chelsey Luren Portraits has been offering complimentary boudoir sessions to any women who are survivors of eating disorders.
As eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness and something that is so shrouded by guilt and shame, we felt that this was something so important to do for our clients.
I am so honoured to be able to share this interview with all of you. The strength and courage that it takes to share one's story is something that is truly inspiring. Not only does it give hope to those who are going through recovery, but also to the loved ones of those who are ill.
Thank you Miss S. for your bravery throughout the session and in sharing your words with us here.
Can you tell us a bit about your ED history?
My eating disorder was triggered by a physical injury that resulted in my having to take time off from my running and active life style – I later found out through my work with my counselor that the grass roots of my ED stemmed from feelings of being unworthy, unheard, and trapped.
What was the turning point in your choosing recovery - what made you decide that you wanted recovery?
It came to a point that I realized I was out of control, and that I couldn’t stop on my own accord.
Is there one word that represents what eating disorder recovery means to you?
What are you most proud of in your recovery journey?
That I have been able to release the shame I felt, and learned to love myself again.
What is the best recovery advice you have ever received?
The truth will set you free – the more I was honest with myself about my behaviours and motives, the better I was able to shift my dysfunctional behaviour
Do you have a go-to self care activity?
Hiking <3 Chasing the sunrise up mountainsides saved my life.
What made you decide to do a boudoir session?
The story of Chelsey really played into my decision to do the photo shoot, as she too had experienced an ED I felt like she could relate to my feelings toward my body, and I trusted her. I felt like this experience could really support me in shifting how I see myself.
Would you recommend a boudoir session for anybody else who is recovering from an eating disorder?
100% It was very liberating!
Do you have any other thoughts about your boudoir session that you would like to share?
I remember a specific moment in the session when Chelsey showed me one of the photos she took, and I began to cry – in that moment, I think it was the first time in a long while I saw myself as beautiful.
Thank you again to Miss S. for you courage in sharing your story and allowing me to share your images!
